12,000 Piedmontese. The troops were commanded<br />

by <strong>the</strong> celebrated De Cat<strong>in</strong>at, lieutenant-general of<br />

<strong>the</strong> armies of France. The "four hundred"<br />

Waldenses looked down from <strong>the</strong>ir "camp of rock"<br />

on <strong>the</strong> valley beneath <strong>the</strong>m, and saw it glitter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with steel by day, and sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g with camp-fires by<br />

night. Cat<strong>in</strong>at never doubted that a s<strong>in</strong>gle day's<br />

fight<strong>in</strong>g would enable him to capture <strong>the</strong> place.<br />

That <strong>the</strong> victory, which he looked upon as already<br />

won, might be duly celebrated, he ordered four<br />

hundred ropes to be sent along with <strong>the</strong> army, <strong>in</strong><br />

order to hang at once <strong>the</strong> four hundred Waldenses;<br />

and he had commanded <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants of P<strong>in</strong>erolo<br />

to prepare feux-de-joie to grace his return from <strong>the</strong><br />

campaign. The head-quarters of <strong>the</strong> French were at<br />

Great Passet--so called <strong>in</strong> contradist<strong>in</strong>ction to Little<br />

Passet, situated a mile lower <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> valley. Great<br />

Passer counts some thirty roofs, and is placed on an<br />

immense ledge of rock that juts out from <strong>the</strong> foot<br />

of Mont Gu<strong>in</strong>evert, some 800 feet above <strong>the</strong><br />

stream, and right opposite <strong>the</strong> Balsiglia. On <strong>the</strong><br />

flanks of this rocky ledge are still to be seen <strong>the</strong><br />

ruts worn by <strong>the</strong> cannon and baggage-waggons of<br />
