The Waldenses <strong>in</strong>terpreted this as an<br />

<strong>in</strong>terposition of Providence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir behalf. It had<br />

given <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> power of repell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vader.<br />

Climb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> slopes of <strong>the</strong> Pra, and issu<strong>in</strong>g from all<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir hid<strong>in</strong>g-places <strong>in</strong> its environs, <strong>the</strong>y spread<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves over <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> paths of which<br />

were familiar to <strong>the</strong>m, and while <strong>the</strong> host stood<br />

riveted beneath <strong>the</strong>m, caught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> double toils of<br />

<strong>the</strong> defile and <strong>the</strong> mist, <strong>the</strong>y tore up <strong>the</strong> great stones<br />

and rocks, and sent <strong>the</strong>m thunder<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

rav<strong>in</strong>e. The Papal soldiers were crushed where <strong>the</strong>y<br />

stood. Nor was this all. Some of <strong>the</strong> Waldenses<br />

boldly entered <strong>the</strong> chasm, sword <strong>in</strong> hand, and<br />

attacked <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> front. Consternation seized <strong>the</strong><br />

Piedmontese host. Panic impelled <strong>the</strong>m to flee, but<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir effort to escape was more fatal than <strong>the</strong> sword<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Vaudois, or <strong>the</strong> rocks that, swift as arrow,<br />

came bound<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>. They jostled<br />

one ano<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>the</strong>y threw each o<strong>the</strong>r down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

struggle; some were trodden to death; o<strong>the</strong>rs were<br />
