Under favor of <strong>the</strong> darkness, <strong>the</strong>y advanced to<br />

<strong>the</strong> bridge which crossed <strong>the</strong> Dora, on <strong>the</strong> opposite<br />

bank of which <strong>the</strong> French were encamped. To <strong>the</strong><br />

challenge, "Who goes <strong>the</strong>re?" <strong>the</strong> Vandots<br />

answered, "Friends." The <strong>in</strong>stant reply shouted out<br />

was "Kill, kill!" followed by a tremendous fire,<br />

which was kept up for a quarter of an hour. It did<br />

no harm, however, for Arnaud had bidden his<br />

soldiers lie flat on <strong>the</strong>ir faces, and permit <strong>the</strong><br />

deadly shower to pass over <strong>the</strong>m. But now a<br />

division of <strong>the</strong> French appeared <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir rear, thus<br />

plac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m between two fires. Some one <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Vaudois army, see<strong>in</strong>g that all must be risked,<br />

shouted out, "Courage! <strong>the</strong> bridge is won!" At<br />

<strong>the</strong>se words <strong>the</strong> Vaudois started to <strong>the</strong>ir feet,<br />

rushed across <strong>the</strong> bridge sword <strong>in</strong> hand, and<br />

clear<strong>in</strong>g it, <strong>the</strong>y threw <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong><br />

impetuosity of a whirlw<strong>in</strong>d upon <strong>the</strong> enemy's<br />

entrenchments.<br />

Confounded by <strong>the</strong> suddenness of <strong>the</strong> attack,<br />
