mounta<strong>in</strong>s Europe was <strong>in</strong> combustion. Their<br />

brethren or <strong>the</strong> Reformed Church <strong>in</strong> France, <strong>in</strong><br />

Spa<strong>in</strong>, and <strong>in</strong> Italy were fall<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> field,<br />

perish<strong>in</strong>g by massacre, or dy<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> stake, while<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were guarded from harm. But now a new<br />

calamity carried gloom and mourn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>Valleys</strong>. On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 23rd of August,<br />

1629, a cloud of unusual blackness ga<strong>the</strong>red on <strong>the</strong><br />

summit of <strong>the</strong> Col Julion. It burst <strong>in</strong> a water- spout<br />

or deluge. The torrents rolled down <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

on both sides, and <strong>the</strong> villages of Bobbio and Prali,<br />

situated <strong>the</strong> one <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn valley, were overflown by <strong>the</strong> sudden<br />

<strong>in</strong>undation.<br />

Many of <strong>the</strong> houses were swept away, and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants had barely time to save <strong>the</strong>ir lives by<br />

flight. In September of <strong>the</strong> same year, <strong>the</strong>re came<br />

an icy w<strong>in</strong>d, accompanied by a dry cloud, which<br />

sca<strong>the</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>Valleys</strong> and destroyed <strong>the</strong> crop of <strong>the</strong><br />

chestnut-tree. There followed a second deluge of<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>, which completely ru<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> v<strong>in</strong>tage. These<br />

calamities were <strong>the</strong> more grievous <strong>in</strong>asmuch as<br />
