<strong>in</strong> terms <strong>the</strong> moderation of which contrasts strongly<br />

with <strong>the</strong> extent of <strong>the</strong>ir wrongs. Protestant Europe<br />

was horror-struck when <strong>the</strong> tale of <strong>the</strong> massacre<br />

was laid before it.<br />

Nowhere did <strong>the</strong>se awful tid<strong>in</strong>gs awaken a<br />

deeper sympathy or k<strong>in</strong>dle a stronger <strong>in</strong>dignation<br />

than <strong>in</strong> England. Cromwell, who was <strong>the</strong>n at <strong>the</strong><br />

head of <strong>the</strong> State, proclaimed a fast, ordered a<br />

collection for <strong>the</strong> sufferers,[21] and wrote to all <strong>the</strong><br />

Protestant pr<strong>in</strong>ces, and to <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g of France, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tent of enlist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir sympathy and aid <strong>in</strong><br />

behalf of <strong>the</strong> Vaudois. One of <strong>the</strong> noblest as well as<br />

most sacred of <strong>the</strong> tasks ever undertaken by <strong>the</strong><br />

great poet, who <strong>the</strong>n acted as <strong>the</strong> Protector's Lat<strong>in</strong><br />

secretary, was <strong>the</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>se letters. Milton's<br />

pen was not less gloriously occupied when writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> behalf of <strong>the</strong>se venerable sufferers for<br />

conscience sake, than when writ<strong>in</strong>g "Paradise<br />

Lost." In token of <strong>the</strong> deep <strong>in</strong>terest he took <strong>in</strong> this<br />

affair, Cromwell sent Sir Samuel Morland with a<br />

letter to <strong>the</strong> Duke of Savoy, expressive of <strong>the</strong><br />
