Waldenses flow so profusely, a fact for which we<br />

cannot satisfactorily account, unless on <strong>the</strong><br />

supposition that <strong>the</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>gs which now<br />

overwhelmed <strong>the</strong>m came not from <strong>the</strong> mild pr<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

who occupied <strong>the</strong> throne, but from <strong>the</strong> cold, cruel,<br />

and bloodthirsty regent who governed <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom. In short, <strong>the</strong>re is reason to believe that it<br />

was not <strong>the</strong> facile spirit of <strong>the</strong> House of Savoy, but<br />

<strong>the</strong> astute spirit of <strong>the</strong> Medici, prompted by <strong>the</strong><br />

Vatican, that enacted those scenes of carnage that<br />

we are now to record.<br />

The blow did not descend all at once; a series<br />

of lesser attacks heralded <strong>the</strong> great and<br />

consummat<strong>in</strong>g stroke. Mach<strong>in</strong>ations, chicaneries,<br />

and legal robberies paved <strong>the</strong> way for an<br />

exterm<strong>in</strong>ation that was meant to be complete and<br />

f<strong>in</strong>al.<br />

First of all came <strong>the</strong> monks. We have seen <strong>the</strong><br />

plague with which <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valleys</strong> were visited <strong>in</strong><br />

1630; <strong>the</strong>re came a second plague--not this time <strong>the</strong><br />

pestilence, but a swarm of Capuch<strong>in</strong>s. They had<br />

been sent to convert <strong>the</strong> heretics, and <strong>the</strong>y began by<br />
