Located in the north-west of
Croatia, Istria borders Italy and
Slovenia. Often compared to Tuscany,
and referred to as the undiscovered
Riviera due to its rolling hills, dense
pine forests, flowing streams and
deep valleys, whitewashed villages,
green meadows, olive groves and
vineyards.
However, this is a much less
touristy Riviera boasting a superior
infrastructure due to the ambitious
rebuilding of the country since the
end of the war of independence. With
no expense spared to create state
of the art roads and tunnels while
maintaining the history and culture
of the quaint towns and villages.
The area is famous gastronomically
including, but not limited to, truffles,
oils, asparagus, honey and lavender
with festivals held regularly for many
of the locally grown delicacies and
wine days allowing visitors to tour
the wineries of Istria and taste and
purchase the local wines and chat to
the wine cellar owners about wine
production.
During the summer months, Istria takes
on a vibrant cosmopolitan vibe to rival
any other European city. Regular festivals
take place including the Summer Sensual
Days featuring top Latin American dance
artists and DJs from around the world
for a celebration of exciting beach and
pool parties with over 40 hours of dance
workshops, featuring top instructors
teaching a variety of dance techniques
including Salsa and Rumba.
The Pula Arena, the mesmerizing historical
Roman Amphitheatre based at the southern
tip of the Istria Peninsula, is the venue for
the Foo Fighters this summer, promising
to be a genuinely fantastic rock music
experience in this stunning architectural
arena where, in Roman history, gladiators
would fight to the death.
To cement the cosmopolitan ambience
of Istria is the 66th Pula Film Festival this
year featuring international films showing
at various locations and attracting film stars
from around the world.
