IMPORTANCE, AIMS AND POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF RESEARCH<br />
According to WHO, one in every 6 people’s death (a total of 9,6 million deaths in <strong>2018</strong>) is<br />
due to cancer, making it the second leading cause of death globally. In most cases, the<br />
cause of faliure in pharmacotherapy is originated in the tumor’s apace development of<br />
resistance against cytotoxic agents, which is also called as multidrug resistance (MDR).<br />
This issue is unsolved to the present day, which calls for an urgent need for a radically new<br />
approach in enhancing our strategies.<br />
Ecdysteroids are analogs of ecdysone, a moulting hormone of arthropods, that are nontoxic<br />
and bioactive in mammals. Some of their less polar derivatives combined with a<br />
certain chemotherapeutic agent have a strong chemo-sensitizing effect on both drug<br />
susceptible and MDR cancer cell lines. The main goals of our research are the identification<br />
and semisynthetic chemical modification of new and promising lead molecules (e.g.<br />
production of fluorine substituated derivatives and their self-assembling nanostructures),<br />
as well as defining their pharmacological potential.<br />
AMBITIONS AND CAREER GOALS<br />
As a medical student I would like to represent the level of quality this profession requires<br />
both in my academic studies, and in my research. Apart from improving my cooperating<br />
and problem solving ability, research also provides me with an important support in<br />
leading me in the scientific literature, which sufficiently supplements my academic<br />
knowledge with comprehensive and up-to-date information. I also hope that our work<br />
can lead to results that can emerge as useful help in therapy.<br />
