IMPORTANCE, AIMS AND POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF RESEARCH
Our research unit is devoted to study the operation of the nervous system in physiological
and pathological conditions. There are many neurodegenerative diseases, however, we
focus on the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which is the most common degenerative
disease of the motor neuron system.
Our main goal is to understand the complex mechanism and consequences of the
disease furthermore to find possible therapeutic approaches. In our current experiments
we would like to investigate the changes in communication of motor neurons and their
neighboring non-neuronal cells in their natural environment with the acute and chronic
neurodegenerative animal models in vivo. From methodological point of view we rely
on geometrical statistically derived biologically relevant three-dimensional parameters
acquired by basic structural investigations (light, fluorescent, and electron microscopic
techniques), and biological structural research, labeling techniques for molecular imaging.
AMBITIONS AND CAREER GOALS
In the course of my scientific career I would like to study and understand the primary factors
leading to the wide spectra of neurodegeneration and pathomechanisms of neuronal
death. My aim is to accumulate proper knowledge that can serve the human society and
medical science. I hope it will give me a possibility to contribute to development of novel
therapeutic approaches.
