IMPORTANCE, AIMS AND POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF RESEARCH<br />
Our research group works on the analysis of cell-mediated innate immunity in different<br />
Drosophila species. In the species of the ananassae subgroup of the Drosophila genus<br />
we have identified multinucleated giant hemocytes which are responsible for the<br />
encapsulation of larger foreign particles, such as parasitoid wasp eggs. Multinucleated<br />
giant hemocytes highly resemble multinucleated cells present in human granulomas.<br />
Diseases associated with granuloma formation, such as tuberculosis, are still widespread.<br />
According to the WHO’s 2015 report, approximately one third of the world’s population<br />
is suspected to be infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The aim of our research<br />
is to identify Drosophila factors which would then enable us to better understand the<br />
molecular mechanisms of granuloma formation and function.<br />
AMBITIONS AND CAREER GOALS<br />
During my career, I would like to decipher the mechanisms of innate immunity among<br />
physiologic and pathologic conditions as fully as possible. As a medical researcher, I<br />
can help patients both directly and indirectly, while working in a hospital ward or in the<br />
laboratory, as well. Obtaining a PhD degree and expanding my knowledge in a research<br />
centre abroad are also among my goals.<br />
