Voyage North - The Fonna Telemark Camp, Norway

ONE
I’m playing my 12-string on the petite porch of my cute mini-cabin I’m sharing with my son Sam, and the
Father of the FEO Freeheeler European Opener, Richard Schürf. The mini-cabin sits in an impossibly green
fairytale valley near a fishing lake. We are at the Folgefonn hytteog Gardscamping: the basecamp of the Third
Edition of the Fonna Telemark Camp. Steep hills rise on both sides of me. Cows are grazing in a lazy field in
front of a grange painted in homage to Pink Floyd and Metallica.
Richard and Sam are gone. They, along with Per Ståle Grude, and a tight group of fellow telemarkers, headed
back up-valley to the Fonna Glacier at 8pm. This was their second ski session of the day. We all rock n’ roll
telemarked the Fonna Glacier ski lift in the morning. Excellent conditions and a great vibe ruled the day. But,
the crew wanted more. So they headed
back up the 30 minutes it takes to
drive to the glacier from camp. This
time with skins. It was officially summer,
meaning the sun does not set
in this beautiful region of southern
Norway until 11pm.
I decided to stay and chill and play
guitar. In front of the petite porch I
was occupying sat a group of tents
and small camper vehicles belonging
to a young group of snowboarders
on their Midsommar Break.
