on-mountain elite Alpinist Unit that cruises around Hermon dressed in all-white, sporting white skis and the

ever-present M4 assault rifle slung on the back. Trained in mountain warfare, the Swiss ski-trainer helped the

Unit with ski technique, Swiss-style. He was from near St. Moritz, he told me. I asked if he spoke Romansh,

the least-spoked of the four official languages of Switzerland - a dialect from around the St. Moritz region.

He smiled that I even knew that, and said yes he did. We met a group of olive-green fatigue-wearing young

women of the Israeli Defence Force, all very charming and pretty. Nabih Abo Saleh, the ski patrol director, a

Syrian Druze from Majdal Shams, came over to hang out and regale us with funny stories. Jakub and I were

just astounded by the whole atmosphere of Mt Hermon. The skiing was stunning, and it was good to know

that in this segregated country, Mt Hermon Ski Area is a melting pot where Jews, Muslims, and Druze all get

together to rock n’ roll on skis.
