time between when Sam finished his school semester and the
start of the Fonna Telemark Camp led to this non-stop driving
journey. I think next time we will fly to Oslo because Oslo to
the Fonna Glacier is only a 7-hour drive.
Sam and I woke the next morning and drove my RAV4 onto
the ferry at Hirtshals, Denmark. The crossing to Kristiansand,
Norway passed in a pleasant 2.5 hours. We spent the rest of
the magical day driving amongst magical landscapes, north
past lush forests, worn smooth majestic stone mountains, with
tiny multi-color storybook Norwegian hamlets down low.
And gorgeous lakes - so many lakes. Norway is mind-blowing.
We jogged west climbing high over a mountain pass, Freyr, son of the sea god Njörður showing us many
faces, blessing us with rain and sun and back to rain in quick succession. We passed the very cool-looking
terrain of the ski area of Røldal. Through tunnels under mountains until we hit sea-level and the massive
Hardangerfjord. Past Jondal, and up valley in the cosmic Norwegian twilight, Sam and I finally reached the
Fonna Telemark Camp. It was 11pm and Per, Richard, and the rest of our crew were partying. I wouldn’t expect
anything less from my telemark comrades.
