Ski with a Cause

Fenshoke Sherpa studiert Tourismus in Kathmandu. Sie
ist ganz aufgeregt! Zum ersten Mal wird sie auf Skiern
stehen. “Unser Familienunternehmen lebt von Trekking
und Bergsteigen”, sagt sie. Ihr Vater war Everest-Guide
und besitzt jetzt eine kleine Agentur, und sie sieht das
Skifahren als eine mögliche Zukunft sowohl für das Geschäft
ihrer Familie als auch für den Tourismus in Nepal.
Und sie wünscht sich, dass die Nepalis selber diese Touren
führen können.
Fenshoke will Skifahren lernen, im Himalaya. Das ist
trotz der vielen Berge hier etwas Besonderes.
Mit 7 österreichischen und deutschen Skilehrern und 20
nepalesischen Teilnehmern sind wir auf dem Weg zum
Annapurna Basecamp. Unser Ziel: Den nepalesischen
Skitourentourismus auf lokale Beine stellen.
Fenshoke ist eine der weiblichen Teilnehmerinnen, die
ein Drittel der nepalesischen Schüler auf unserer Reise
ausmachen.
Rajani und Shanti haben auch kleine Kinder und wenn
sie mit dem Militärdienst in den Bergen sind, passen
ihre Männer auf die Kids auf. Doch so sehr einen diese
gelebte Gleichberechtigung in einem Drittland zu überraschen
vermag, so wurde 1951 bereits das Frauenwahlrecht
in Nepal eingeführt.
Das Eintauchen in die sich stetig wandelnde Gesellschaft,
in dem man die Teilnehmer über einen längeren
Zeitraum wirklich kennenlernt und die Möglichkeit,
sie bei dem Verfolgen ihrer Träume unterstützen zu
können, machen diese Reise zu etwas ganz besonderem.
Fenshoke Sherpa is studying tourism in Kathmandu.
She is very excited! For the first time she will be on
skis. “Our family business lives from trekking and
mountaineering,” she says. Her father was an Everest
guide and now has a small agency, and she considers
skiing as a possible future for both her family’s business
and tourism in Nepal. And she hopes that the
Nepalis can lead these tours themselves.
Fenshoke wants to learn to ski in the Himalayas. Despite
the many snowy mountains here, this is something
special.
With 7 Austrian and German ski instructors and 20
Nepalese participants we are on the way to the Annapurna
base camp. Our goal: to put Nepalese ski tourism
on a local footing.
Fenshoke is one of the female participants who make
up a third of the Nepalese students on our trip.
Rajani and Shanti also have young children and when
they are in the mountains as military service crew,
their husbands take care of the kids. This lived equality
may surprise you in a third country, but the right
to vote for women was introduced in Nepal already
in 1951.
The immersion in the constantly changing society, in
which you really get to know the local participants
over a longer period of time and the opportunity to
support them in pursuing their dreams, make this trip
something very special.
