Where It All Started
Born in Cromer, Norfolk on 2 May 1947,
Dyson is the youngest of three children.
Getting his early education at Gresham’s
School, where his father taught, Dyson went
on to study art at the Byam Shaw School of
Art, and then the Royal College of Art. It was
here that he delved into industrial design, and
helped design the Mark 3 of the Sea Truck,
a landing craft manufactured by Rotork
Marine. He then reinvented the wheelbarrow
by replacing the wheel with a ball for better
maneuverability, and called it the Ballbarrow.
Continuing work related to water crafts,
Dyson also invented the Trolleyball to launch
boats, and the amphibious Wheelboat.
Sometime in 1978, Dyson was becoming
very frustrated with the vacuum cleaner
that he was using. Its dust bag had become
irreparably clogged and seemed to be losing
suction power. Inspired by a local sawmill that
used cyclone technology to separate sawdust
particles from the air, Dyson got to work on a
vacuum cleaner that operated the same way.
