With reading becoming
more and more
challenging, as the
amount of technology we are
implementing into our homes is
greater, it has never been more
important to teach our children
good reading habits—which
they can use in their academic
life as well as their everyday
life. A new study published
last month by The Ohio
State University explores the
relationship between reading
and vocabulary in prepubescent
children. The study found that
children whose parents read
them five age-appropriate
books a day (containing
between 140 and 228 words,
on average) start Kindergarten
having heard a vocabulary
potentially 1.4 million words
richer than a child who had not
been read to. The study also
highlights a heightened sense of
empathy, increases in creativity,
and improvements in mental
flexibility. So, with this being the
