Help a Child Stay in our Catholic Schools!
by John Notaro, Executive Director, Futures in Education
The natural excitement of a new school year
in our Brooklyn and Queens Catholic schools
and academies has been magnified this year by
the highly anticipated return after six months
of separation between our students and our
teachers. They all miss each other – they all
miss their school!
The value of a Catholic education in the Diocese
of Brooklyn was underscored by the success
of so many of our schools, their teachers,
principals and parents, who for the last three
months of schooling last year joined together,
while apart, to ensure that our students’ education
was not disrupted, but continued with the
same dedication shown in person.
That dedication to the children educated in
our schools continued this summer. Our principals,
teachers, staff and the Office of the Superintendent
have worked diligently to put together
a plan for both in-person and remote learning
for the new school year with special attention
to the safety of our schools, the health of our
school families, and continued focus on academic
excellence and faith-filled learning. On
September 9, all our schools will be ready to
open their doors!
This preparation, both at the schools and by
our ever patient and committed parents, has
come with a cost. Besides the social and emotional
toll, the financial burden our schools and
families face is substantial.
When Futures in Education began a COVID-19
relief fund, we received 2,000 new scholarship
applications seeking over $3 million in tuition
relief. Our committed donors stepped up and
helped provide $900,000 in support. Parents
made deeper sacrifices and schools drew from
already strapped budgeted funds to cover the
rest. Sadly, some of our schools could not overcome
the impact.
Now as we enter the new academic year, demand
for a Catholic education is strong, especially
as our public schools struggle with their
reopening plans, beholden to special interests
that do not consider the children as a top priority.
For our families and our schools, funding
remains the biggest obstacle. Schools have
