Russia’s Golden Ring
Onion-domed churches, medieval monasteries,
traditional crafts and beautifully unspoilt
countryside characterise the string of ancient
settlements to the north-east of Moscow. Take
a tour from the capital through these quaint
towns and villages en route to St Petersburg.
The Trans-Siberian Railway
Often viewed as the ultimate rail journey, the
Trans-Siberian Railway will take you from the
majesty of Red Square in Moscow, through
remote Russian steppes to the heart of Siberia
and then onwards to Mongolia, finally arriving
into Beijing in north-east China.
Volga River cruise
Visit the more rural settings of Russia between
Moscow and St Petersburg on a scenic cruise
along Europe’s largest river. En route, take in
the medieval cities of the Golden Ring as well
as canals, vast lakes and the distinctive wooden
architecture of Kizhi Island.
Palaces of St Petersburg
Located on the Gulf of Finland, about 30km
south-west of St Petersburg, Peterhof Palace lies
in 200 hectares of ornate landscaped gardens
and is famous for the terraced fountains of its
Grand Cascade and Samson statue. Built under
the command of Peter the Great in 1705, the
palace itself is comparatively modest, but its
waterfront setting and architectural beauty
make it a highlight of any visit to Russia’s
cultural capital.
Peterhof Palace, St Petersburg
Also close to St Petersburg, Catherine Palace at
Pushkin is larger and even more extravagantly
furnished. One of the most sumptuous parts
is the famed Amber Room, a chamber entirely
furnished with ornate panels of glowing amber.
