Tanzania’s vibrant landscapes are a
photographer’s dream, from snow-capped
Kilimanjaro to exotic Zanzibar, via the
plains of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro
Crater. Visitors can witness dramatic
wildlife spectacles such as the annual Great
Migration. Neighbouring Kenya is home to
wide-open spaces, impressive mountain
ranges, deep lakes and golden beaches.
Here, too, are the fascinating pastoralist
cultures of the Maasai and Samburu. This
is the birthplace of safari, and the country’s
23 national parks offer exceptional wildlife
viewing. To the north lies biodiversity haven
Uganda, home to chimpanzees, some 1,000
species of bird and over half of the world’s
mountain gorilla population.

Ngorongoro Crater
The national parks of Tarangire, Lake Manyara,
Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti form the
Northern Safari Circuit, one of Africa’s most
impressive wildlife areas. Tarangire particularly
comes to life in the dry season, when its central
river becomes a magnet to large animals,
including elephants. Lake Manyara contains a
beautiful soda lake and an exceptional variety
of wildlife, including elusive tree-climbing
lions. The vast Ngorongoro Crater is home to
one of the world’s greatest concentrations of
wildlife and presents dramatic views from its
vertiginous rim. The Serengeti is known for
its expansive savanna, perennially excellent
wildlife and the great wildebeest migration.
Laikipia is a beautiful region that stretches
from the foothills of Mount Kenya to the
shoreline of Lake Baringo. The area covers a
wide range of landscapes and has become
a sanctuary for elephants, lions, leopards,
buffaloes and a wealth of plains wildlife.
The safari lodges in Laikipia are among the
most opulent in Kenya, and the involvement
of local Samburu and Maasai communities
allows visitors a rare opportunity to meet local
people. The large conservancy of Lewa and
Ol Pejeta is excellent for those interested in
wildlife conservation and learning about the
vital work the communities do to protect their
environment.
