the fifth century and a climb to the top offers
Dambulla’s Buddhist temple complex is home
to an impressive collection of statues, including
a 15-metre-long reclining Buddha. For those
who want to combine culture with wildlife,
Minneriya Tank and its impressive gathering
of Asiatic elephants can be visited alongside
Polonnaruwa.
The main attraction of the south-west coast is
historic Galle and its 17th-century Portuguese
fort, which encloses a 36-hectare site complete
with grand mansions, narrow streets and art
galleries with the Handunugoda tea estate
just a short drive away. Along the coast are
numerous villages displaying the region’s
cultural heritage and miles of pristine beaches.
Mirissa is a top whale watching spot, while
Tangalle’s palm-fringed coves are a 20-minute
drive from the cave temples at Mulkirigala.
Further east, Hambantota is an ideal base for
exploring the nearby national parks of Bundela
and Yala as well as the temples at Kataragama.
The distinct north-east coast, with the shallow
waters of Passikudah, traditional fishing
villages and coral reefs, is best visited from
April to September.
