EUROPE • EASTERN EUROPE
Discover Eastern Europe
The countries of Eastern Europe are
home to alluring medieval cities, beautiful
scenery and a living heritage of folklore and
deep-rooted traditions. Yet, despite their
proximity, they display incredible diversity
and individuality. The Baltic States offer
charming historic old towns; and Romania is
home to fortified Saxon churches, medieval
castles and traditional rural villages.
Further east, across the Black Sea, lie the
Caucasus nations of Georgia, Armenia and
Azerbaijan, the region where Christianity
first flourished and where fire was
worshipped millennia before.
The Baltic States
Historic cities of Tallinn, Riga & Vilnius •
Tranquil coastal resorts
The three countries that make up the Baltic
States – Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia – each
have their own cultural identity and highlights.
Estonia looks to its Nordic cousins in Finland
and has a distinctly Scandinavian feel. Latvia’s
capital, Riga, has a large Russian minority and
an industrial port which gives it a distinctive
Russian feel. While the Lithuanian capital,
Vilnius, to the south, is more Germanic, with
its routes historically linked to Poland and
Germany.
The Southern Caucasus
'The Three Brothers', Riga, Latvia
The small size of these countries, combined
with their excellent transport links, makes
the region an easy and rewarding threecentre
break.
The Southern Caucasus is where Asia and
Europe collide – both physically and culturally
– in the most dramatic of fashions. The region
is smaller than the UK yet home to three highly
diverse countries. In oil-rich Azerbaijan, you
can find intriguing remnants of fire worship
that pre-date the arrival of Islam, such as the
Fire Temple of Baku and its eternal flame.
Georgia’s rolling landscape is home to an
ancient viticulture – it was here that wine was
first produced some 4,000 years ago.
Armenia is one of the world’s oldest Christian
nations, reflected by picturesque hilltop
churches and cave monasteries dating back to
late antiquity.
