The Deep South
The Deep South is defined by its riveting
history, influential culture, and meltingpot
cuisine. Stretching from the Atlantic
Ocean to west of the Mississippi, this region
encompasses the states of South Carolina,
Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and
Louisiana. This is where you can learn about
Alabama’s part in the civil rights movement,
take a steam paddler down the Mississippi,
sample authentic mud pie and fried chicken,
and discover the home of country music in
Nashville. This is the home, too, of New Orleans’
vibrant live-music scene, and Kentucky’s
southern charms and Wild West history.
Exciting, diverse and distinctive, the Deep South
guarantees visitors an unforgettable journey.
Downtown, Nashville Tennesse
The capital of Tennessee was named after
Francis Nash, a general of the Continental
Army during the American Revolutionary War
in 1779. Today, it is famous for being the home
of country music with two of the most popular
attractions being the Country Music Hall of
Fame and the revered Grand Ole Opry. Learn
about the greats from the genre’s inception
to the modern day and sample the city’s lively
music scene. Alternatively, visit the original Jack
Daniel's distillery or take a tour of a plantation
for a poignant insight into the region’s history.
One of the more historic and culturally
significant cities of the Deep South, Memphis
had a prominent role in the American civil rights
movement and is home to the National Civil
Rights Museum. Most people associate Elvis
Presley with the city and a visit to Graceland
– the mansion where the legendary singer
lived and died – is a must. Many other famous
musicians got their start in Memphis. Wander
Beale Street to experience some blues music
yourself, or sample the barbecue food for which
this area has become internationally renowned.
Downtown French Quarter, New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans is a blend of various cultures,
traditions and nationalities from its past. The
oldest part of the city, the French Quarter, dates
back to 1718 and is brimming with colonial-era
architecture, while the handsome mansions of
the Garden District were created for wealthy
Americans in the 19th century. We recommend
soaking up the vibrant music on Frenchmen
Street in the ‘birthplace of jazz’, enjoying an
evening steamboat cruise, learning to cook
Creole and Cajun food, and taking an airboat
tour on the wetlands in search of alligators.
