The South West
The geographic region of the South West
covers Arizona, New Mexico and parts of
California, Colorado, Nevada, Oklahoma,
Texas and Utah. Two of its largest cities are
Las Vegas and Phoenix, both of which provide
the most common entry points for visitors
from the UK. The South West is home to more
than five national parks, exceptional wildlife
and one of the largest geological formations
on Earth. Hike up mighty mountains, look
down on enchanting desert scenes, join an
authentic cowboy experience, and learn about
the traditions of one of the many indigenous
tribes that call this land home. The sprawling
landscapes, the big skies, the impressive rock
formations and the deep history entice many
to come and visit this part of the country.
Monument Valley
The Grand Canyon Zion National Park
Setting for many Hollywood films • Fascinating
Navajo history • Striking sandstone formations
Located on the border of Arizona and Utah,
Monument Valley is famous for its monolithic,
otherworldly sandstone formations. Thanks to
these striking Mars-red buttes and dramatic
desert panoramas, it has served as the setting
for many a Hollywood blockbuster. The valley
is also a Navajo Tribal Park, and has been the
home of Navajo families for generations. Most
of the major monuments can be seen along
a 27-kilometre dirt road. However, to explore
further, you will need to hire a Navajo guide.
Many different ways to see & experience •
One of the world's most spectacular canyons
Stretching 446 kilometres from end to end
and reaching a maximum depth of almost two
kilometres, the Grand Canyon is a colossal
natural phenomenon that must be seen to
be believed. There are three main rims to the
canyon – the South, North and West – with
the South Rim the most popular access point,
and where you can drive on a forty-kilometre
stretch of road that runs along the canyon
edge. At the West Rim, visitors can experience
the Grand Canyon Skywalk.
Rainbow-colored rock layers • Variety of
wildlife & plants • Range of hikes
Just a two-hour drive from Las Vegas lies Zion
National Park, known for its steep, jagged
cliffs, emerald pools and arid landscapes.
There are many rewarding hikes that can
be taken by the more adventurous traveller,
either independently or with a guide. The
park is within a deep valley whose elevated
vantage points provide gorgeous views across
the canyon. Rock formations seem to change
colour as the sun rises and falls, glowing
different shades of orange and red.
Las Vegas
Famous evening entertainment • Large &
elaborate hotels • World-class shows
Las Vegas is world-renowned for its casinos,
fine dining and neon-lit entertainment. Visitors
can select from a wide range of hotels, some of
which are very unusual, and it is worth staying
in the city for a few nights. In the evening, a
variety of dazzling shows delight audiences
here, including performances by Cirque du
Soleil, famous illusionists and celebrated
singers-in-residence. There are frequent
direct flights from the UK to Las Vegas with a
duration of under 11 hours.
