healthy skin and a shiny coat. Less skin
inflammation occurs. Thus, CBD oil helps
with inflammatory skin diseases and
chronic skin problems, such as constant
itching, and supports wound healing.
Weight control and heart health
Omega-3 fatty acids in CBD oil, also called
gamma-linolenic acid, can increase a
dog's energy level, making it more active
and thus preventing obesity. Omega-3
also helps the metabolism to run at full
speed and burn more fat. Thus, omega-3
can also regulate an animal's weight and
improve heart health.
Body and mind
CBD oil is not only effective for physical
diseases. It also promotes mental balance
in stress and nervousness. CBD oil has
a calming, antispasmodic and relaxing
effect, it can relieve anxiety, restlessness
and tension. Cannabinol has only a very
mild psychoactive effect for the relief
of acute states of anxiety and panic, e.g.
during New Year's Eve fireworks. CBD oil is
also effective for nausea, such as during a
car ride. It promotes the joy of movement.
Thus, it is helpful for maintaining an
animal's activity and vitality, for a balanced
state of mind as well as for improving the
general well-being.
Which side effects of CBD are
possible?
CBD oil is usually well tolerated in its pure
form and has no side effects when used in
appropriate doses. In case of accidental
overdoses, they are usually harmless.
Possible side effects may include: Loss of
appetite, dry mouth, low blood pressure,
drowsiness, or diarrhea. If medications
are also taken, CBD can strengthen or
weaken the effect of a drug under certain
circumstances, and in some cases it can
also lead to interactions.
What should be considered
when using CBD oil?
It is important to choose the appropriate
CBD oil and the right quality. A good hemp
oil should have a natural CBD content. It
should have been made from the whole
plant, not only from CBD isolates, and
thus contain all plant components in
their natural balance. The CBD oil should
contain the full spectrum of cannabinoids
of the hemp plant. For dogs and cats,
a CBD oil without terpenes should be
used. For a dog, for example, hemp oils
with a low concentration with up to 4 %
cannabidiol are suitable.
Dosing and dosage forms
CBC can be given as oil, but also as tablets,
capsules or powder, and as a natural feed
supplement in the form of treats, such as
hemp snacks. In external applications for
the treatment of skin diseases, CBD oil
can also be applied to the skin. CBD oils
are available in different concentrations
and can be individually dosed as drops.
The use of CBD oils should be started
with the lowest possible dose of 0.5 mg
and, if the cannabidoid is well tolerated,
slowly increased to approximately 1 mg
of CBD per kilogram of body weight per
day, divided into three doses daily.
Accordingly, a dog weighing 12 kilos
would get about 6 – 12 drops of CBD per
day. An application period of at least 4
weeks is recommended. If it has a positive
effect, CBD can also be given in the long
term to rebalance a dog's body and
psyche and to strengthen the immune
system permanently. Even an accidental
overdose has no serious side effects. In
any case, however, the information of
the respective manufacturer should be
observed.
The oil can be dripped directly into the
animal's mouth. In liquid form, the active
ingredients can pass directly through the
mucous membranes into the bloodstream.
It is best not to administer CBD oil with
food, but about 2 hours before meals.
Depending on the animal's reaction to
the taste of CBD oil, it can also be hidden
in a small amount of food. In this case, the
oil should be given with a small amount
of food on an empty stomach, followed by
the main meal 2 hours later.
CBD oils are versatile in use. Appropriately
dosed, animals can also benefit from the
positive properties of CBD oils. In any
case, it is recommended to consult with a
veterinarian. Meanwhile, there are many
different hemp products specifically
for animals and numerous suppliers.
Depending on the manufacturer, the
ingredients as well as the CBD content of
the respective oil can vary.
