Pet food has changed a lot during and because of Covid. People have more
time for their pets and have become more aware of their nutrition. Producers
are starting to pay more attention to clean label ingredients, especially
where allergies are concerned. Some human consumer trends that continue to
crossover to the pet food category include increasing demand for added
protein, digestive wellness, and plant-based products. This issue of Petfood
PRO covers these topics - and many others - with the result that our pets
can live to be happy and healthy for as long as possible.
The market for peanut butter treats for dogs has increased
dramatically - and many believe that the trend is driving the
demand for healthier options in the pet food supply and treat
sectors. It is a great way to administer medication as peanut
butter tastes so good to dogs, so they can't detect that hidden
pill! It also works as a great distraction during washing and
grooming, and of course a tool to help with dog training. The full
story is on page 18.
Food safety is a crucially important issue in the pet food
industry. The EU repeatedly reports product recalls due to
salmonella contaminated animal feed, which must therefore
be subjected to thorough treatment and inspection. Thermal
processes are commonly used in the food industry to reliably
kill microorganisms. When selecting the appropriate process,
however, it is important to consider the effects of heat on the
stability of the product to be treated. See page 26.
