opportunity to see many affairs that were masterfully
blended with hand drawings. Of course, in those
times, it was hard to understand how wonderful and
ingenious these were. Nowadays we can understand
how ingenious the work and products were made in
those days. Since we are the third generation, I am
also happy to see that the furniture made by our company
25-30 years ago is still in our users’ homes and
continues to be used.
Which trends and designers influenced you during
and after your student life?
My student life coincided with the time of change for
the furniture-kitchen division of our family company,
Albox, which we operate. It was the time when the use
of natural trees was reduced and more industrial materials
were used. At that time, there was a transition
from classical furniture to modern design furniture in
white and cream tones more intensely. This effect was
carried to us by German and Italian designers. The
German style was simple, durable, squarer designs
with solid colors; the other was the Italian style. The
Italian style, on the other hand, was a little closer to
our old furniture culture, more handcrafted, detailed,
plain and more oval-shaped lines consisting of wooden
colors. I was more attracted to the durable, clearlined
design language of the German style. In addition
to this, I love the fine aesthetic touches of the Italian
style. As a design language, Tom Kundig and Monique
Gibson are the designers I follow.
What would you recommend to young friends who
want to tend to design?
There is a lack of ethnic design language in our
country. We are one of the largest producer countries
in the world. For this reason, I think our designers
should also use this production volume. Scandinavian,
German, Italian styles are known to everyone. We
must also make a new language. We should benefit
from our own culture and the developing modern
technology. I recommend them to follow different
designers and brands around the world. I suggest
that they examine the products and tools around them
and look at what they can add to these products and
comment. Inspiration is, of course, a necessity for all
of us. However, making original and unique designs
always puts us one step ahead. Inventions always
arise out of necessity. We meet new technologies very
quickly. This means new needs and new inventions.
Let’s not forget that our needs and necessities are
also the needs of others. Considering this, we can
make new designs and products.
Finally, do you have anything to add?
In our country, more value should be given to design
and designer. We, designers, can change this by
making original designs and investing in our brands
and brands. Unfortunately, we have very few design
brands and too many foreign brands come here. It’s
up to us to change that. By providing more added
values to our own brands and products, we must be
original and open to development.
