Safe Driving & Insurance Rates Part II By: Jim Valkenburg / Insurance Insight previously wrote about how auto premiums I could be reduced simply by reducing claims that insurance companies pay. My first installment dealt with Distracted Driving and my advice was to Pay Attention. Here’s another: Texting & Driving. This takes distracted driving to the upper limit. Something to contemplate: If you are traveling at 55 MPH, in just the 5 seconds it takes to send or read a short text message, you have already zoomed past the length of a football field! Would you want a family member or friend to be on the road with someone so oblivious to the traffic around them? A majority of States have passed laws with penalties for texting while driving that include hefty fines, license suspension, and even prison time. But the rate of accidents caused by texting continues to increase. Is sending a text worth the financial burden? Is it worth risking your freedom? Is it worth the emotional damage an auto accident causes to everyone involved? Is it worth a life? In today’s world a person may verbalize a text rather than using the keypad. Does that make it safer? Statistics say no. The simple act of verbalizing a text or even talking on a cell phone while driving is a dangerous distraction. Blue Tooth technology and hands-free cell phone use has made the practice so common that many barely consider it a problem. And yet, the accidents caused by cell phone use continue to rise every year. A few statistics: 1. The National Safety Council reports cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes every year. 2. Nearly 390,000 injuries occur yearly from accidents caused by texting while driving. 3. Texting while driving is 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk. 4. Per an AAA poll, 94% of teen drivers acknowledge the dangers of texting while driving, but 35% admitted to doing it anyway. 5. 21% of drivers involved in fatal accidents were distracted by their cell phones. The statistics are staggering. Are we really that apathetic about our safety and the safety of others? Apparently so. Do you drive regularly? My advice PAY ATTENTION. Sound familiar? His primary purpose is to give out real information that can be used to make intelligent insurance decisions. 36 April 2022 Dealing With Gas Pain By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road It’s only natural that the older we get, the more aches and pains we learn to live with. Unfortunately, the latest pain we have is the screaming from our wallets every time we fill up at the gas station. This is a pain we can’t control. It may go away at some point in the future, but we can’t predict when. To help ease your suffering a bit, we’d like to offer a few tips to help improve your vehicle’s overall fuel efficiency. We aren’t talking 10 mpg, but even the smallest changes can help. 1. Think about how you drive. Do you speed away from the green light? Do you accelerate until you have to brake? The smoother you drive, the more fuel you’ll save. Experts say between 5-10 percent. Driving smoothly means your wallet will thank you, and so will your passengers. 2. Do you idle while waiting for your spouse at the supermarket? Obviously, when it’s 115 degrees outside you need to run the air conditioner, but the more you idle, the more incremental fuel you use, as well as add emission to the atmosphere. So turn off the car and go inside. And don’t turn off the idle on/off switch; it really does help. 3. Are your tires under inflated? It’s important to check your tire pressure once a month. Even one psi under the recommended pressure will affect your fuel efficiency. In addition, keep your car maintained. The check engine light is there for a reason. Don’t ignore it because it’s not a convenient time to get it serviced. 4. While many cars warn to use “Premium Fuel Only,” the truth is your vehicle will run just fine on regular gas. Premium fuel helps the engine deliver the maximum horsepower, but the incremental losses in power from running regular gas is virtually imperceptible to a nonprofessional driver. Adding a tank of Premium once every few months will be fine. We can’t all drive EVs now, so these few simple tips should help alleviate the pain at the pump.
