<strong>WP</strong>1/5 Letters from the USA and Canada<br />

37 letters and one postscript from <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong> to his<br />

wife Annie, children William and Violet, father-in-law William<br />

Mitten and sister Fanny (Mrs Sims) from the USA, 1886-1887,<br />

some with original envelopes, one with enclosed press cuttings;<br />

sketch map of Niagara Falls probably an enclosure to a letter to<br />

Violet; 5 small envelopes of press cuttings from American and<br />

Canadian Newspapers, and one rough note. Many letters and press<br />

cuttings contain passages underlined or marked in red or blue<br />

pencil.<br />

Notes: Pieces were out of date sequence but with no obvious<br />

logical arrangement and have been placed in date order. Letters<br />

have been briefly listed but NOT yet all read for content . <strong>The</strong><br />

letters were wrapped in part of a 1916 envelope addressed to<br />

WGW and a torn sheet of paper partly printed with local council<br />

minutes, both annotated; these have been transferred to more<br />

Letter from <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong> to his wife Annie, from New<br />

York hotel, (USA), Saturday 23 Oct 1886, continued Monday<br />

from 142 East 19th Street New York; re sea voyage from England,<br />

a week of rough weather and seasickness followed by five days of<br />

calm; ships food; passengers, one American an accomplished<br />

comic actor and singer; charades, concerts and deck quoits; chess<br />

with ships doctor and an American passenger; New York harbour,<br />

delay at customs, Mr Browne not there to meet him; hotel<br />

recommended by Mr Wood, hotel rooms and food; meeting with<br />

Mr Browne and transfer to his house; Mrs Browne; meeting with<br />

Mayoral candidate Mr George; visit to Central Park; plans to go to<br />

Boston on Thursday; Statue of Liberty very fine.<br />
