Large envelope labelled in WGW's? hand ''Illustrations of Palm<br />

trees'' containing two paper folders enclosing:<br />

17 black and white illustrations mounted on paper, some interleaved<br />

with protective tissue, apparently all from engravings or woodcuts,<br />

most of or including palm trees, including a man riding a horse<br />

pulling a small two-wheeled carriage against a background of<br />

tropical gardens, by B. Mannfeld, captioned ''Cubanische Volante'',<br />

all captioned in German, most with annotations on the back in<br />

<strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s hand, including ''Cocos butyracea | Sketch<br />

from nature'' on the back of ''Am Magdalena | Guadua. Weinpalme |<br />

Lichtdruck v A .Frisch. Berlin'', ''Woodcut from a photograph<br />

(indifferent)'' on the back of a scene captioned ''Mexicanische<br />

Landschaft'' and ''Types of Quichua Indians | From photographs'' on<br />

Notes: Dates based on dates of Mannfeld and <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong><br />

<strong>Wallace</strong>. <strong>The</strong> envelope also contained an undated ''Punch'' cartoon<br />

and undated watercolour of azaleas, when listed; see <strong>WP</strong>17/9 and<br />

<strong>WP</strong>17/10. Individual pieces have been numbered in pencil in square<br />

brackets <strong>WP</strong>17/11/1-17 but no individual piece records have been<br />

created at 28 Jan 2004.<br />

pencil on the back in the same hand (<strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s?); the<br />

first annotated ''Deepdene, Frimley Green Surrey | W. J. Stilman<br />

[sic] | 28293'', showing a house through trees; the second annotated<br />

''W. J. Stillman's grounds'' | 28293'', showing woods with bracken<br />

around the base of trees; the third annotated ''W J Stillman's<br />

grounds'' | 28293''showing trees surrounded by almost bare ground,<br />

with a post and wire fence and iron barred gate in the background<br />

from which leads a walking path partly edged with a rustic wooden<br />

fence.<br />
