stamped in red on the right lower front of the picture. Undated. A<br />

different image of Wasdale Crag, attributed to Bingley, illustrates<br />

'<strong>The</strong> Ice Age and its Work ...' (Fig 12, vol. 1).<br />

some patches of snow, in the background. Annotated on the back<br />

in pencil in <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s? hand ''Terminal Moraine |<br />

Inner Tongue | Middle Harbour Flat | Nr Appleby | 4408''; place<br />

probably Cumbria (given the stamp) but ''Middle Harbour'' and<br />

''Appleby'' occur together with ''moraine'' in Cumbria, NZ and the<br />

USA. Stamped in purple on the bottom left ''Godfrey Bingley. |<br />

Thornichurst, | Headingley, Leeds. '' and in red on the right<br />

''Copyright.'' Undated. Possibly considered for, but not published<br />

in, '<strong>The</strong> Ice Age and its Work ...' (Vol. 1) where images of other<br />

terminal moraines occur.<br />

8. Sepia photo loosely mounted on paper, image approximately 10<br />

cm x 14 cm, showing three young women and three older men<br />

standing next to each other on short grass with an open hut with a<br />

thatched roof in the background. in row facing the camera; two of<br />

the women are naked to the waist, all three are wearing long<br />

wrapped skirts and have their long hair tied back; the men are<br />

darker skinned, with long shaggy hair, and are wearing loin-cloths;<br />

two carry tall bows and arrows, one in the centre carries a tall<br />

staff. <strong>The</strong> paper mount has ''Veddahs - Ceylon'' written on the<br />

lower margin in pencil in the same hand as that on the undated and<br />

unattributed photos of Veddahs reproduced in 'Affinities and<br />

Origin of the Australian and Polynesian Races' vol. 1, though this<br />

is not reproduced there.<strong>The</strong> hand is may be a variant of <strong>Alfred</strong><br />

<strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s or that of Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy; see<br />

letter <strong>WP</strong>1/1/163, from <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong> to WGW 15 Dec<br />

1898 with postscript from Annie <strong>Wallace</strong> re photos from Ceylon.<br />

found when listed with item 10 below in a paper folder made from<br />

a lined exercise book page labelled in pencil ''Australians'' in<br />

WGW's? <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s? hand; not published in<br />

''Studies'' but other photos of Australian natives are and this may<br />

have been considered and rejected.<br />
