Sep and Oct 1887. Several letters from <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong> to<br />

his family from America mention the Museums (see particularly<br />

<strong>WP</strong>1/5/12, 19 Dec 1886 and Raby 2002, ch. 12 n. 21).<br />

<strong>WP</strong>6/6/11 Papers re Studies Scientific and Social<br />

Miscellaneous images related to <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>, ''Studies<br />

Scientific and Social'', (London 1900) including defective and<br />

duplicate proofs, and rejected? photographs of subjects illustrated;<br />

comprising:<br />

1.Small sepia photographic print approx. 10 cm x 7 cm, undated,<br />

showing a narrow wooden walkway with railings running through<br />

a steep narrow gorge; apparently of the Aarschlucht but at<br />

different view from that reproduced in '<strong>The</strong> Gorge of the Aar...'<br />

(Studies vol 1); possibly a reject: photographer probably Ananda<br />

Coomaraswamy.<br />

2. Small sepia photographic print approx. 10 cm x 7 cm,<br />

apparently of the gorge of the Aarschlucht; a slightly darker copy<br />

of item 1 above<br />

3. Photograph of a section of grooved and fissured cliff or rocky<br />

shore on card captioned in <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s? hand in ink<br />

''Glacial groovings near Barmouth.'' Sepia photographic print<br />

approximately 11 cm x 16 cm, torn at top right corner, loosely<br />

mounted on card 16 cm x 20 cm; pencilled annotations including<br />

''Barmouth?'' ''base'' and ''from the front'' in <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong><br />

<strong>Wallace</strong>'s hand can be seen on the back of the photo, other text<br />

appears to be hidden under glued section at the top. <strong>The</strong> mounting<br />

card is marked in pencil on the front above the photo ''4'' over an<br />

arrow and on the back in pencil in <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s? hand<br />

''12502- | Swan Sonnenschein o/n 459 | Tuesday''. A similar photo<br />

attributed to ''an unknown friend'' illustrates '<strong>The</strong> Ice Age and Its<br />

Work. Erratic Blocks and Ice Sheets' (vol. 1, fig. 14).<br />

4. Colour print approximately 22 cm x 16 cm, possibly from a<br />

from a hand-coloured photograph, of a sea cove between chalk<br />

cliffs with grassy slopes and two buildings in the foreground and a<br />

short sandy beach on which a number of small rowing boats have<br />

been drawn up, with others in the water, in the middle ground;<br />

printed caption on the bottom edge ''10373. Flamborough North<br />

Sea Landing''; ''Photochrom'' printed faintly on the back at bottom<br />

right. Undated (c. 1900?) and unattributed. A different image of<br />

Flamborough illustrates '<strong>The</strong> Ice Age and Its Work. Erratic Blocks<br />

and Ice Sheets.' ( vol. 1, fig. 16, p. 84).<br />

5. Sepia photo approximately 20.5 cm x 13 cm showing a lake<br />

surrounded by mountains, annotated on the back in pencil in<br />

<strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s? or another's hand ''Loch Avon and<br />

Cairngorm.'' Undated and unattributed; among other images in a<br />

brown paper envelope labelled in blue pencil in <strong>Alfred</strong> <strong>Russel</strong><br />

<strong>Wallace</strong>'s? or WGW's? hand ''Photos &c for Studies'' (i.e. <strong>Alfred</strong><br />

<strong>Russel</strong> <strong>Wallace</strong>'s ''Studies Scientific and Social'', London 1900)<br />

when listed and though not reproduced there, may have been<br />

considered as an illustration for one of the two articles on the Ice<br />

Age.<br />
