Mr. Urquhart with daughter Hillary and grandson Charlie Mr. Urquhart with grandson Charlie In the fall of 2006, Mr. Troy Urquhart arrived at Montverde Academy, where he served in the Upper School for 11 years. Although his time at MVA was paused for a few years, his love for the Academy and fellow faculty and staff members was bigger than anything else. Mr. Urquhart earned his undergraduate degree from the University of West Florida in English, a Masterʼs in English and an EdS in Curriculum and Instruction. Although the start of his career did not begin in education, he was inspired by his parents’ dedication to education and making a difference and pursued the same career path. He wanted to spend his life building “lifelong relationships,” which later became the core of his decision to begin at MVA as an Upper School English teacher. Being a member of the MVA community is unlike any other as Mr. Urquhart recalls all the people that were a huge part of his life, during some of the best moments as well as challenging ones. “It [MVA] has been a huge part of my life and family and I don’t know how I could ever separate it.” MVA has a special place in his family: his mother taught Economics in the Upper School after she retired from teaching in northwest Florida, and his daughter Hillary graduated from MVA and then returned to teach in the Lower School after finishing her degree at Rollins College. His time away from the Academy leading an Upper School in Little Rock, Arkansas, helped prepare him to become the exceptional leader he is today. Mr. Urquhart, now the Dean of Middle School, came to see the important potential of the Middle School years and the rewarding work he could do with Middle School students and teachers. “To me, it was an easy decision coming back to MVA. Dr. Kesselring is such an amazing friend and leader who has helped me grow professionally and personally.” “It’s hard to imagine what my life would be without MVA, I’ve grown here so much.” Although his journey is far from over, his expectations for the Academy have already far exceeded what he could have imagined when he first arrived at Montverde 16 years ago. The leadership brought by Dr. Kesselring has “helped me so much throughout my career.” “Troy cares deeply about the mission and culture of Montverde Academy. The work that he does, and the high expectations he has for that work, are focused on fulfilling that mission,” said Emilie Fracker, Associate Dean of Middle School at MVA. “Above all else, he knows that it is the strong relationships we form with other members of the school community that allow the work to flourish. He is patient and never rushes to a decision without looking at an issue from all sides. He has been wonderfully generous with his time as I’ve made the transition to administration this year. I feel very blessed to be working with him to lead the Middle School division.” THE TOWER | SUMMER <strong>2022</strong> 21
