BASEBALL<br />

The Montverde Academy baseball team ended this<br />

spring with a 17- 9 overall record, which included<br />

big wins against highly skilled teams in tournaments<br />

across three states.<br />

The Eagles started the season winning three of<br />

their first four games against local-based schools<br />

before competing in a trio of showcase tournaments<br />

against the best high school competition around.<br />

The Eagles competed in the Alabama Showdown in<br />

Hoover, Alabama, the PBR Spring Break Experience<br />

in Emerson, Georgia and the Florida League High<br />

School Invitational in Sanford, Florida, winning a<br />

combined seven of 12 games in those three events.<br />

The elite competition proved to elevate the Eagles<br />

play as MVA opened the month of April winning their<br />

first five games, four of which were won via shutouts,<br />

outscoring opponents by a combined 54-1 in that<br />

span. Overall, the Eagles posted seven shutout wins<br />

this season, including an 11-0 win over Ocoee (2/15),<br />

2-0 over East Forsythe (3/5), 10-0 over Grayslake<br />

Central (4/1), 5-0 over Ridge Community School<br />

(4/4), 21-0 over Iola Scandinavia (4/5), 10-0 over<br />

Lake Highland Prep (4/13) and 15-0 over Celebration<br />

High School (4/27).<br />

Salvador Alvarez<br />

Statistically, the Eagles were led in hitting by senior<br />

Salvador Alvarez who batted a team-high .521 and<br />

led the Eagles in runs with 30, while finishing second<br />

on the team with 25 runs batted in. AJ Goytia finished<br />

second on the team in batting average, hitting .450<br />

while leading the team in doubles with 11. Anthony<br />

Cole batted .385 and led the team in home runs with<br />

four and runs batted in with 27.<br />

Pitching wise, Matthew Heyl led the way with a 2.27<br />

earned run average, while striking out 52 batters in<br />

43.2 innings of work.<br />
