On April 2, the Montverde Academy boys’ and girls’
basketball teams both won their respective championship
games at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers.
The boys defeated Link Academy, 60-49, while the girls
beat New Hope, 67-54, to secure Montverde Academy’s
place in GEICO High School Nationals basketball history.
The win by the boys marked the sixth time in program
history they have won the GEICO High School Nationals
championship, while the girls won the title for the first time
in program history.
“As a school community we are in awe and incredibly
proud,” said Mrs. Khrystal Phiri, Director of Athletic
Operations. “It is amazing to be a small part of the history
they made.”
The boys were the No. 3 seed in the eight-team
tournament. First, they defeated No. 6 seed AZ Compass,
70-63, in the quarterfinal round before beating in-state
rival, No. 2 seed IMG Academy in the semifinal round, to
set the stage for the national championship showdown
against No. 4 seed Link Academy, whom they beat to win
it all.
“We didn’t have as great of a regular season as we
thought we should have. The guys worked extremely hard
the last seven weeks for three hours each day, six days a
The girls not only won the championship for the first time,
but it was the first time the Lady Eagles earned a spot in
the national tournament. The girls earned the No. 3 seed
