Whether you work on adesign or a photograph in Photoshop, you oftenadjust the hue, saturation, and brightness of animage. You can fine-tune shadows andhighlights or completely alter the overall toneof a photograph. You can transform a colorphotograph into a grayscale image, colorize anold grayscale image, or make a color imagelook like an antique colorized photograph. Youcan also tone a photo as photographers used todo in the darkroom by digitally dodging andburning. And you can create these effects usingmany different techniques.Whenever you make color and tonaladjustments, some pixel information isdiscarded. By applying your corrections on aduplicate layer, on separate layers, or on aSmart Object layer, you can editnondestructively. Using Photoshop’s adjustmentlayers, you can make changes withoutpermanently altering pixel values. And byopening or converting an image or a layer to anew Smart Object, you can apply most filtersas Smart Filters, making them continuouslyeditable as well as nondestructive. Smart Filterscan even be used when sharpening aphotograph, so you can reedit the changeswithout altering pixels until you complete youredits and flatten the image.Working on a color calibrated monitor, as shownin task #14, is even more important whenworking with color or tone. Otherwise, you maybe changing colors that are not really in theimage, and what you see on your monitor maylook very different when it is printed.
