Chapter6ChapterProcess Photosin Camera RawCamera Raw is a plug-in automatically includedwith Photoshop. RAW is a file format, such asCR2 on advanced Canon cameras or NEF orNikon’s advanced cameras.All digital cameras first record the raw data onthe sensor, and then the camera’s internalprocessor converts the data into the file yousee on the camera’s LCD screen. If you selectthe JPEG file format in your camera, thecamera’s built-in processor applies themanufacturer’s predetermined settings, and itdecides what capture data to keep and whatdata to throw away to create a pleasing image.It also automatically compresses the file. Whenyou make any changes to a JPEG or even aTIFF file, with Photoshop, you change pixelsthat have already been processed andcompressed inside the camera.If instead you select the RAW format on yourcamera, the RAW file includes all the originaluncompressed captured data. You can thenprocess the file with Camera Raw in yourcomputer, so you can control the desired tonalrendition, color balance, saturation, and othercharacteristics of the final image.You can still adjust JPEG and TIFF files inaddition to RAW files with Camera Raw andbenefit from nondestructive edits. Then all theimage data in the file, whether it is a JPEG, TIFF,or RAW file, is preserved and the adjustmentsare simply stored as metadata, in a separatesmall file, called a sidecar XMP data file.
