However,altering images in Photoshop is so easy thatnew users often overdo it and make peoplelook like plastic versions of themselves. You aretrying to enhance a person’s best features andminimize other areas, not turn him intosomeone else. If your subject looks at hisphoto and thinks that he looks good, you havedone your job well.You can use the tools in Photoshop to removespots and blemishes, enhance the eyes, whitenteeth, soften the face, and more. You can alsochange a model’s eye color to fit a client’srequest. You can enhance a portrait by addinga catchlight to the eyes, even if the camera didnot capture one. You can even reduce wrinklesand smooth the skin without plastic surgery.Applying the enhancements on separate layersenables you to preserve the original image aswell as blend or reduce the changes, makingthem appear more natural. You can keep all thelayers and continue to make small adjustments.To finalize the image, select Flatten Image fromthe Layer menu before saving it with a newname. Like a magician, you should not revealyour tricks or show the original unretouchedphoto to the subject!Because these enhancements should be subtle,a pen tablet is particularly useful whenretouching portraits.
