To find the potential difference V a -V b we should add the algebraic change in
the potential difference for the two batteries as we move from point b to
point a.
V a -V b = +ξ 2 - ξ 1 = 12 - 10 = 2v

V a -V b = +ξ 3 + ξ 2 - ξ 1 = 5 + 15 - 30 = -10v
