About 30 million people each year choose ferries to travel to or from Sweden. That is almost twice the number of passengers on international flights. In 2006, almost half (46 per cent) of the passengers travelled between Sweden and Denmark. Around eleven million passengers travelled on the ferries between Helsingborg and Helsingör. The domestic service between the Swedish mainland and the island of Gotland had 1.5 million passengers. Apart from ferries, smaller dry cargo vessels are the most frequent callers in Swedish ports with almost 15 per cent of the calls. Calls by container carriers and larger roro vessels are on the increase, while calls by smaller ro-ro vessels have almost been halved in the period 1998-2006. Last year, Swedish ports handled a total of 180.5 million tons of cargo. 157.8 million tons, or 87 per cent, were goods in international trade. Total cargo volumes have increased by 16.7 per cent since 2002. Loaded cargo has increased by 21.4 per cent and discharged by 12.4 per cent. 82 per cent of the international trade cargo loaded in Swedish ports was destined to ports in other EU member states. More than half of the cargo volume was liquid bulk. Sweden imported 19.3 million tons of crude oil and 13.3 million tons of petroleum products. The export of petroleum products was actually larger with 17.4 million tons shipped abroad, indicating the large refinery capacity in Sweden. The growth trend continued during the first half of 2007. The ports handled 93.8 million tons of cargo, up by almost five million tons compared to the same period last year. 13 million passengers travelled to or from Sweden by ferry, about the same amount as in the first half of 2006. Some highlights from some significant ports The Port of Göteborg, Sweden’s and Scandinavias largest, reports sales for SEK 1.5 billion (EUR 164 million) and a pre-tax profit of SEK 157 million (EUR 17.1 million) for 2006. The port company has however been hit by a severe blow recently because of frequent traffic interruptions, not least after a lengthy labour conflict. The Port of Göteborg has invested heavily, in money and prestige, to become the hub for Stora Enso. The forest giant has however decided to move significant cargo volumes away from Göteborg “The effect for us has been that the service has not been fulfilled, including late loadings and sometimes half filled vessels”, says Stig Wiklund, head of development for Stora Enso Logistics, to SSG. Cargo handling in the port of Helsingborg increased by 42 per cent during the first seven months of 2007 compared to the same period last year, primarily due to Samskips decision to make Helsingborg the hub for its Baltic services. Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) had another prosperous year in 2006 with both profit and turnover higher than in 2005. In 2006, the net turnover reached SEK 649 million (EUR 71 million) (SEK 602 million in 2005). The profit before taxes landed on SEK 93 million (EUR 10.1 million) (SEK 79.7 million in 2005). CMP handled 16.6 million tons of cargo, up by 1.4 million tons compared to the year before, and with 440,000 handled new cars, CMP has placed itself on the top 20 list of European car handling ports. The company expects a significant increase by about 50 per cent to 2010. The Port of Trelleborg continues to gain traffic on Poland and the Swedish train operator Green Cargo and Polish PKP has announced that they wish to move train services from Ystad to Trelleborg. so is the Port of Ystad despite the loss of ferry services to Trelleborg. Karlshamn is the fastest growing port in Sweden. A new railway shuttle connecting Karlshamn with Göteborg is expected to boost traffic. The port has formed a strategic partnership with Karlskrona, where the ferry service to Poland continues to grow. September was the first single month with more than 9,000 freight units carried by Stena Line’s ferries on the route. Sole owner The first phase in the expansion of the Pampus terminal in Norrköping has been concluded and the municipality has become sole owner of the port operating company in a SEK 243 million (EUR 26.2 million) deal. The port of Oxelösund is not one of the ten strategic ports but its cargo volumes continue to increase. On a twelve month basis the port had handled 7.6 million tons by the end of August. Stockholm has decided to go on with the Norvik terminal project (see separate article). Cruise continues to be of significant importance for Stockholm.
