DONATING
Go through your closet and I’m sure you will find some
clothes, shoes, purses or belts that could be donated to your local
organization. Consider donating your old cellphone, home accents,
books, food or furniture. This simple act of kindness could be
lifechanging and make an immediate difference to those in need.
MAKE TIME FOR KIDS
Whether it’s your own children, kids at your place of worship
or neighborhood kids, taking the time to make them feel special
is priceless. It might be playing a board game together, reading
them a book, taking them to the local park or buying them lunch.
It could even be as simple as listening to what they have to say.
PARTICIPATE IN CHARITIES AND FUNDRAISERS
Finding a cause that you are passionate about will give you
great motivation to assist an existing event or even create a new
fundraising or charity event. Why not have a yard sale for charity,
hold a golf tournament or start a Walkathon. These provide donors
with a healthy option to support your cause. Plus, they usually
take place within a community, which means you can involve
local businesses and supporters. Did you know that you can raise
money by inviting your friends out to eat? When you collaborate
with a local restaurant, you can raise a portion of the night’s
proceeds for your cause. And partnering with a restaurant isn’t as
difficult as you might think. Designing and selling t-shirts is a great
fundraising idea that both individuals and organizations can use to
raise money. A t-shirt fundraiser is a win-win situation for everyone
involved: the campaign creator gets to raise money and promote
their cause via merchandise, and supporters get a memorable item
in return for their donations. Sometimes volunteering, donating,
and raising funds are the most effective and easiest if you join with
others who have already dug the trenches to set up a program.
There’s often no reason to reinvent when you can add your time
and resources to local organizations who have gained positive
reputations in the community. Non-profits are in abundance; you
just need to search on the web for your local area.
RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS
Volunteering your time and energy can help strengthen your
neighborhood with simple gestures of kindness. Lending a helping
hand to a neighbor who is juggling handfuls of groceries or
moving a piece of furniture is a generous act that leaves a lasting
impression. Helping an elderly neighbor with their lawn or grocery
shopping will make you feel good. Random acts of kindness can
make the most significant impact on someone else. Send ‘good
morning’ messages, compliment a complete stranger, hold the
door for someone, pick up litter at the beach or make dinner for a
family in need. Start today and make somebody’s day better!
PHILANTHROPY
Sometimes it is easier for you, and the community organization
around you, to give cash donations instead of in-kind gifts.
Financial philanthropy is a great way for local businesses to get
and stay involved in the community. Choosing an organization
and giving a percentage or portion of proceeds each month is
both good for PR and the community.
