Looking back at important dates that took<br />

place in the month of <strong>November</strong> both here<br />

in America and across the globe.<br />

NOVEMBER 2, 1947<br />

• The world’s largest plane “Spruce Goose” took its first and only<br />

flight in Long Beach Harbor, California. It flew about a mile at an<br />

altitude of 70 feet. Costing $25 million, the 200-ton plywood eightengine<br />

Hercules was designed, built and<br />

flown by Howard Hughes.<br />

NOVEMBER 3, 1957<br />

• Soviet Russia launched the<br />

world’s first inhabited space<br />

capsule, Sputnik II, which<br />

carried a dog named Laika.<br />

NOVEMBER 4, 1842<br />

• Abraham Lincoln married<br />

Mary Todd in Springfield, Illinois.<br />

BIRTHDAY – NOVEMBER 4, 1916<br />

• “The most trusted man in America” Walter Cronkite<br />

(1916-2009) was born in St. Joseph, Missouri. From 1962<br />

to 1981, he was the anchorman of the CBS Evening News.<br />

NOVEMBER 5TH<br />

• Known as Guy Fawkes Day in Britain, for the anniversary of the<br />

failed “Gunpowder Plot” to blow up the Houses of Parliament.<br />

NOVEMBER 5, 1911<br />

• Aviator C.P. Snow completed the first transcontinental flight<br />

across America, landing at Pasadena, California. He had taken off<br />

from Sheepshead Bay, New York, on September 17th and flew<br />

3,417 miles.<br />

• Abraham Lincoln was elected as<br />

the 16th U.S. President and the first<br />

Republican. He received 40 percent of<br />

the popular vote.<br />

BIRTHDAY - NOVEMBER 6, 1861<br />

• Inventor of the game of basketball,<br />

James Naismith (1861-1939) was born<br />

in Almonte, Ontario, Canada.<br />
