• The largest antiwar rally in U.S. History occurred as 250,000<br />

persons gathered in Washington, D.C., to protest the Vietnam War.<br />

NOVEMBER 17, 1869<br />

• The Suez Canal was formally opened after more than 10 years<br />

of construction.<br />

NOVEMBER 19, 1978<br />

• More than 900 Americans died in the biggest mass<br />

suicide in history in Jonestown, Guyana. Members<br />

of the religious cult “Peoples Temple” was led by<br />

Reverend Jim Jones. He ordered the followers<br />

to drink a cyanide-laced fruit drink. Those<br />

who refused were forcibly injected. Only a<br />

few cult members managed to escape.<br />

NOVEMBER 20, 1947<br />

• Princess Elizabeth married Philip<br />

Mountbatten. She became Queen Elizabeth<br />

II upon the death of her father in 1952.<br />

NOVEMBER 21, 1920<br />

• The IRA (Irish Republican Army) shot and killed 14 British<br />

soldiers in Dublin in what became known as “Bloody Sunday.”<br />

• Edward Teach was an English pirate<br />

known as Blackbeard who roamed around the<br />

Caribbean and <strong>Atlantic</strong> waters. He was killed off<br />

the coast of North Carolina after a short 2 years<br />

as a pirate by Lt. Robert Maynard.<br />
