EDITOR’S NOTE
Time for
a wood renaissance
Common detractors of wooden or
mass timber buildings often cite their
susceptibility to catching fire or their
weakness towards harsh weather
conditions as reasons for not pivoting
away from steel or carbon structures. One
cannot blame them: It has been instilled in
us through popular culture — look at what
happened to one of the three little pigs
whose house was built with sticks — and
images of rackety, old wooden houses that
wood is weaker and more error-prone in
comparison to its carbon-heavy cousins.
Is that not why this magazine exists? We
want readers out there to start getting
familiarised with images of mass timber
buildings, to get familiar with how wood
technology has advanced to become better
than steel or concrete.
For instance, our column, The Big Picture,
showcases wood in their varied and
marvellous uses, how they can be erected
as skyscrapers or as wide-spanning
structures that can cover up to several
football fields. The theme for this issue
is Theatres, featuring theatre halls or
buildings with the theatre itself made with
mass timber or solid wood like cherry and
oak (p.14). Wood is already known for its
acoustic properties, long associated with
string instruments, so how will it bolster the
structural, aesthetic and technical qualities
of theatres, auditoriums, and concert halls?
We also hope to demystify the process of
building or designing with wood. A case
study by Dr Joaquim Mohr explores how
automated technology for prefabricated
wall elements from timber construction
machine manufacturer WEINMANN has
helped Haas Fertigbau to achieve more
flexible production (p.41). Our interview with
designer Clint Nagata from BLINK Design
Group sheds light on hospitality design: How
wood has played a part in lending a sense of
sophistication to luxury resorts and hotels
(p.48). Software solutions like CLT Toolbox
also aim to help simplify mass timber design,
lowering the barriers to entry (p.38).
By 2028, the global cross-laminated timber
(CLT) market is projected to hit US$2.6bn
(p.24). It is a ripening market with lots of
potential, even if housing and furniture
markets across the world are not doing
too great now. The vanguard of the
construction industry is indisputably wood
and mass timber, and we, together with the
whole woodworking community, will help
to enable that.
