suuecT. Cl:R1F: FSTfMATE FOR SHIPP1NCCONCRETE CORE SAMPLES
The following calculations shnw that core s arnplcs widi a direct reading of equal trl or less than
400,000 dpm/ 1 00em' will be below the de fi nitionofradioactive material as defined in 49 CFR 173.403
of 70 Bq/g (2F3 pCi/g). Gach sample will consist of concrete mate rial from four, two inch co re
samples and enough water to make a slurry coruiSrncy. 'I-he distribution of radionuclides is based on
previous concrete samples taken front the below grade Fuel Storage Basin that would also he
rcprescntative of these concrete sunples.
Given:
Cylinder Volutuc = nrh Radius of caucrcte core (r) = I inch
Concrete Density = 2.35 elem' height of con: sample taken (h) — 0.25 inches
27 pCi = Dq Maximn m liwt reading on core = 400.000 dpnt/1 Wcar
2.22 dpm = pCi
Calculations:
V — (3.14) (1 in.) `(0 25in) = 0.79 in' (16.4 cm'/iii) (4 core samples) = 512 cm'
(400.000 dpm/5 L2 cm) (cm'/2.35 g) = 3 3 2E3 dtm/g
3.32L3 dpm/g (pCi/2.2 dpm) = 1.5E3 pCi/g or 55.4 Bq/g
