Abstract<br />
The title of <strong>Europe</strong>an Capital of Culture (ECoC) is considered to bring many positive cultural, eco<strong>no</strong>mic or<br />
even political effects. The article represents a closer study to identify <strong>the</strong> role of ECoC in regional<br />
development, <strong>the</strong> region on Transylvania. For a better understanding of <strong>the</strong> ECoC’s role and impact in<br />
regional development, we will present fur<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> case of two Romanian cities: Sibiu, which in 2007<br />
received <strong>the</strong> title of ECoC, and Cluj-Napoca, which hopes to be rewarded with this title for <strong>the</strong> year of 2020<br />
and which candidates to <strong>the</strong> title toge<strong>the</strong>r with o<strong>the</strong>r two Romanian cities .<br />

Introduction<br />
<strong>Europe</strong>an Capital of Culture represents a project conceived to bring <strong>Europe</strong>ans closer<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r by highlighting <strong>the</strong> diversity and richness of <strong>Europe</strong>an cultures and raising<br />
awareness of <strong>Europe</strong>ans’ common values and history. We consider that <strong>the</strong> need of<br />
citizens’ toge<strong>the</strong>rness is linked to <strong>the</strong> need of a common <strong>Europe</strong>an identity, an identity that<br />
can be shaped through culture.<br />
