‘She had this theory, it was because Marc had a<br />

small dick and David had a monster. A lot of their<br />

personalities come <strong>from</strong> this: David can charm the<br />

girl and know that through to the conclusion of this<br />

encounter he’s not going to disappoint. Marc<br />

couldn’t.’<br />

David made a good show of seeming<br />

unconcerned by Marc’s petulance – he was cheerful<br />

on the drive back to Beckenham in his Rover in the<br />

small hours of the morning, buying a huge Chinese<br />

takeaway on the way and spreading it over the<br />

dashboard. But though he might appear calm in the<br />

face of such troubles, his music often suffered <strong>from</strong><br />

the confused mess of personalities surrounding him<br />

during this period; he relied, more than most, on<br />

others. That night’s show at the Speakeasy typified<br />

the confusion. Tim Renwick – now David’s preferred<br />

guitarist ahead of Mick Wayne – was booked at the<br />

last minute, but found David’s passivity and lack of<br />

direction irritating. ‘It wasn’t like, “Right, here we go.”<br />

It was more like “What’s next?” and then nothing.’<br />

John Cambridge wasn’t even told there was a show;<br />

he’d turned up for a drink at the ‘Speak’, along with<br />

Junior’s Eyes’ ‘Roger the roadie’, only to be asked<br />

at the last moment, ‘Do you have your drums?’<br />

Fortunately, he kept them in the boot of his Mini<br />

Minor. The last-minute request marked his debut as<br />

<strong>Bowie</strong>’s official drummer.<br />
