Berlin. Once they’d decided to work together, their<br />

collaboration started to take shape through what<br />

was, in 1994, the most high-tech of methods.<br />

Reeves Gabrels first heard about the planned album<br />

just after he’d completed a tour with Free’s Paul<br />

Rodgers. He walked into a hotel rooom in Oklahoma<br />

City with the strains of ‘All Right Now’ ringing in his<br />

head and saw a fax <strong>from</strong> Eno lying on the floor. Soon<br />

fax machines around the world were spooling out<br />

apparently impossible concepts and intractable<br />

questions: ‘One idea that David and Brian were<br />

trying to figure out was almost like a Charles Ives<br />

thing where you have two songs playing<br />

simultaneously then have them suddenly link up<br />

where the same word, beat, everything was right on<br />

the same spot: a mathematical problem.’<br />

In essence, the work harked back to David’s first<br />

trip to America, when he’d discovered the music of<br />

outsiders like Iggy Pop, the Legendary Stardust<br />

Cowboy and the fake Lou Reed. Hoping to tap a<br />

similar source in their quest to record the most<br />

extreme music of their careers, <strong>Bowie</strong> and Eno<br />

ventured, in January 1994, to the Gugging Hospital<br />

near Vienna, where psychiatrist Leo Navratil had<br />

assembled a group of patients who would become<br />

known as Outsider artists. In 1981, Navratil opened<br />

a formal Haus der Künstler (house of artists) within<br />

the hospital, where these artists could live and work<br />

as a community. <strong>Bowie</strong> told Interview magazine<br />

later, ‘Some of them don’t even do [their art] as an<br />

expression of themselves; they do it because their<br />

work is them. Their motivation for painting and
