Mendelssohn was disturbed to find his chivalrous<br />

instincts aroused by this glamorous apparition; soon<br />

he and his friend were struggling with David’s trunk –<br />

so extraordinarily heavy they speculated he was<br />

rival Kim Fowley’s words, ‘purveyor of a posse of<br />

pussy’ – a skill he proved by sending the girl ‘like a<br />

welcoming present’, says Mendelssohn. As<br />

Mendelssohn and <strong>Bowie</strong> reclined in the Holiday Inn<br />

lounge, listening incredulously to a hilarious lounge<br />

duo called The Brass Doubles – an organist and
