status of cross-cultural figurehead to which, despite<br />

too many protestations, he obviously aspired. John,<br />

Yoko, Iggy, Esther and May Pang were among the<br />

friends who pressed at the dressing-room door after<br />

the first performances, enthusing over his theatrical<br />

debut. Throughout the month, journalists <strong>from</strong><br />

weighty tomes, <strong>from</strong> the New York Times, to London<br />

papers The Times and Sunday Times, queued up
