Throughout the summer and autumn, Horton put<br />

his contacts to good use, booking repeat<br />

appearances at the Marquee and the 100 Club, a<br />

run of shows in Bournemouth, where the band was<br />

already building a following, and the Isle Of Wight.<br />

The shows saw the band at their peak. ‘Brilliant,’<br />

says Taylor. ‘They were really good,’ says musician<br />

John Hutchinson, ‘a proper band.’ David and The<br />

Lower Third shared bills with The Pretty Things,<br />

Gene Vincent and The Who (whose Pete<br />

Townshend remarked to David and the band, ‘Shit,<br />

was that one of my songs you just played?’). The<br />

Lower Third often drew a better response than their<br />

guest stars, and built up a rapport with most of them,<br />

sailing out on the Isle Of Wight ferry every week,<br />

sharing a tiny caravan and hanging out on the beach.<br />

Horton’s contacts with the Marquee helped score<br />

them a string of shows on Saturday mornings at the<br />

club, playing live in support to guest artists like The<br />

Kinks or Stevie Wonder, who would mime to their<br />

own records, which were then broadcast on Radio<br />

London complete with audience applause. The<br />

optimistic mood brightened further with a trip to<br />

Paris in November for dates at the Club Drouot.<br />

Between shows, David worked on songs, often<br />

with the whole band crammed into his bedroom at<br />

Plaistow Grove. Today, David voices the insecurities<br />

that he would never admit back then: ‘I didn’t know<br />

how to write a song – I wasn’t particularly good at it. I<br />

had no natural talents whatsoever … and the only<br />

way I could learn was to see how other people did it.<br />
